RECENT PARACONSISTENT DEATH

Andrea Loparic (1941-2021)

I met Andrea Loparic during my first stay in Brazil from August 1991 to August 1992. I was invited by Newton da Costa at this time to spend a year at the University of São Paulo (USP). I was attending Andrea’s seminar and we quickly developed friendship.
In this first year in Brazil my research work was directly linked to some her fundamental works, in particular:
- A.Loparc, "Une étude sémantique de quelques calculs propositionnels, Comptes Rendus de l’Académie des Sciences de Paris, 284a (1977), pp.835-838.
where she presents a bivaluation semantics for the paraconsistent logic Cω, as well as a decision method, following a note published the previous year in CRAS, in which Costa and Alves presented such semantics for the logic C1. As she writes in this note, these results apply directly to intuitionistic logic.
- A.Loparic and N.C.A.da Costa "Paraconsistency, paracompleteness and valuations", Logique et Analyse, 106 (1984), pp.119-131.
source of inspiration for the development of the Universal Logic Project that I reedited in the anthology of universal logic Universal Logic: An Anthology - From Paul Hertz to Dov Gabbay accompanied by an article I wrote presenting this work: J-Y.Beziau, "Paralogics and the theory of valuation”, Universal Logic: An Anthology - From Paul Hertz to Dov Gabbay, Birkhäuser, Basel, 2012, pp.361-372.

Andrea Loparic was also a good friend of Richard Routley with whom she published two papers:
- A.Loparic and R.Routley, "Semantical analysis of Arruda - da Costa P systems and adjacent non-replacement relevant systems", Studia Logica, v. 37, p. 302-320, 1978.
- A.Loparic and R.Routley, "Semantics for quantified relevant logics", In: Third Brazilian Conference on Mathematical Logic, 1980, São Paulo. Proceedings Third Brazilian Conference on Mathematical Logic, 1980.

We will publish a special issue of the South American Journal of Logic in tribute to her edited by Edited by Edelcio G. de Souza (USP, Brazil), Submissions are welcome: see details HERE.
